Tuesday 6Aug19 - Observing

The REU scholars have traveled from UT Austin to the McDonald Observatory in western Texas. TAURUS (our sister program here) scholars went the second or third week of our time here. The observatory is a number of telescopes of different kinds. Yesterday evening, after readjusting our sleep schedules to be awake at night, we observed McDonald Observatory's namesake facility; we used the photometric Otto Struve telescope to study a number of targets in the sky selected by our guide, Dr. Mike Endl. Tonight we are at another telescope doing spectroscopy. Two of our members, Victoria Catlett and Turner Woody, brought targets for us to look for.

Next week we'll be presenting on our posters. I've sent in an outline for Rebecca to look over and am waiting to hear back. We've also been informed that we need to prepare 2-minute pop-up talks in the form of power points. While this might have been mentioned at some point earlier in the program, it hasn't been brought up til this week. In such a short span of time we're expected to produce so much.

A postdoctoral staff member in computational theoretical astronomy at the UT Astronomy Department, Anna,  accompanied us on our trip and helped to drive us down. She had a crucial conversation with me about providing productive feedback at the end of this program; it'll be challenging to maintain positive perspective on that since I've had a largely negative experience.
